Devendra Fadnavis was born in Nagpur in 1970 and came up through the city's municipal politics. He was a councillor at 22 and mayor of Nagpur from 1997 to 1999, and he has sat in the Maharashtra assembly since 1999, first for Nagpur West and, since 2009, for Nagpur South West. He led the state BJP from 2013 to 2015.
Three terms, one very short
He became Chief Minister in October 2014 and completed a full five-year term. After the 2019 election he was sworn in again on 23 November 2019, but that government lasted about 80 hours and fell before a Supreme Court-ordered floor test. He spent the next years as Leader of the Opposition and then, from June 2022, as Deputy Chief Minister under Eknath Shinde, before the Mahayuti alliance's 2024 win returned him as Chief Minister on 5 December 2024.
The affidavit case
The legal matter most often reported against him concerns his own election paperwork. Nagpur lawyer Satish Uke complained that Fadnavis did not disclose two pending cases in his 2014 affidavit. The case went to the Supreme Court, which ordered a fresh trial, and in September 2023 a Nagpur magistrate acquitted him. Fadnavis accepted that the cases had been left out and said the omission was his lawyer's. His 2024 affidavit still lists a related revision case as pending, along with three other petitions.
His 2024 affidavit declares assets of Rs 13.27 crore and liabilities of Rs 62 lakh, and no convictions.
