Three spells in office

He was Deputy Chief Minister from 2010 to 2013 and first became Chief Minister in July 2013, holding the post until the JMM lost the 2014 election. After five years as Leader of the Opposition he returned as Chief Minister in December 2019, leading a coalition with the Congress and the RJD.

The land case

On 31 January 2024 he resigned and was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate, which alleges that he was part of a scheme that used forged records to acquire 8.86 acres in Bargain, Ranchi. Champai Soren took over as Chief Minister. The Jharkhand High Court granted bail on 28 June 2024, and Soren was sworn in again on 4 July. After the JMM-led alliance won the November 2024 election he took the oath for a new term.

On 30 September 2026 a special PMLA court in Ranchi framed money laundering charges against him in the same case, and the High Court declined to stay that order. He has denied the charges. There is no verdict.
