Mohan Yadav was born in Ujjain in 1965 and entered politics through student unions. He won office at Madhav Science College in 1982, rose through the ABVP to become its national secretary from 1990 to 1992, and later led the state unit of the BJP's youth wing.

From Ujjain South to Bhopal

He first won the Ujjain South assembly seat in 2013 and held it in 2018 and 2023. In July 2020 Shivraj Singh Chouhan made him Minister of Higher Education. After the BJP's win in the 2023 election, the party's legislators chose him as Chief Minister. He was sworn in on 13 December 2023, with Rajendra Shukla and Jagdish Devda as deputy chief ministers.

As Chief Minister he has made Ujjain's heritage a theme. In December 2023 he told the assembly that India had set the world's standard time centuries ago and that his government wanted the prime meridian recognised as passing through Ujjain, remarks that drew wide comment.

What the affidavits show

His 2023 affidavit declares no criminal cases, assets of about Rs 42 crore and liabilities of about Rs 8.5 crore. Five years earlier, his 2018 affidavit listed one case: a 2013 FIR in Ujjain under IPC section 171B, which deals with bribery at elections, in which a court had taken cognisance. The later affidavit does not mention it, and we have not found a court order recording how it ended.
