The Sohrabuddin case

In July 2010 the CBI arrested him over the killings of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Kauser Bi and Tulsiram Prajapati, alleging that he orchestrated them. He was granted bail by the Gujarat High Court that October and called the case politically motivated. In 2014 a special CBI court discharged him, citing a lack of evidence and political undertones.

Party chief and Home Minister

He was BJP national president from July 2014 to January 2020. He won Gandhinagar in 2019 and became Union Home Minister, and in July 2021 he also became the first Minister of Co-operation. He held Gandhinagar in 2024 with more than 10 lakh votes.

He has denied a 2013 allegation that he ordered surveillance of a woman, and in 2024 India rejected as "absurd and baseless" a Canadian claim linking him to a campaign against Sikh activists in Canada.
