Manohar Lal Khattar spent most of his working life in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh rather than in electoral politics. He joined the RSS in 1977, became a full-time pracharak three years later and stayed in that role for 17 years before the organisation sent him to the BJP in 1994. From 2000 to 2014 he was the party's organisational general secretary in Haryana. He has never married.
Chief Minister of Haryana
His first election was the 2014 Assembly poll, which he won from Karnal by 63,736 votes. On 26 October 2014 he was sworn in as Chief Minister, and he began a second term after the 2019 election.
He resigned on 12 March 2024, weeks before the Lok Sabha election, and Nayab Singh Saini succeeded him. He gave up his Assembly seat the next day.
During his tenure several of his public remarks drew criticism, including comments about women in 2014 and about rape cases in 2018, and an April 2023 remark about a High Court judge that led opposition parties to demand an apology.
Union Minister
He won the Karnal Lok Sabha seat in June 2024 and joined the Union Cabinet, taking charge of the Power and the Housing and Urban Affairs ministries. In April 2026 he visited Bhutan, where he met the country's energy minister and reviewed the Punatsangchhu hydropower projects, ANI reported.
Record
His 2024 affidavit declares no criminal cases and no liabilities, and assets of Rs 2.54 crore, most of it movable. He declared no cases in his 2014 and 2019 Assembly affidavits either.
