Fifteen years in power

She became Chief Minister of West Bengal on 20 May 2011. In the 2026 election the BJP won 208 of the 294 seats, forming its first government in the state, against 80 for the Trinamool. She lost her own seat, Bhabanipur, to Suvendu Adhikari by 15,105 votes, and he succeeded her as Chief Minister on 9 May.

The split

In June 2026 a group of Trinamool MLAs led by Ritabrata Banerjee won the backing of nearly sixty legislators, and he was appointed Leader of the Opposition in place of Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, her faction's nominee. The rebels elected their own chairperson later that month. On 17 September the Election Commission froze the party's name and symbol, and the next day allotted her faction the name Mamata All India Trinamool Congress. She has challenged the freeze in the Supreme Court.

Her 2026 affidavit declares no criminal cases and assets of about Rs 15 lakh.
