Uddhav Thackeray is the youngest son of Bal Thackeray, the founder of the Shiv Sena. He studied at the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art in Mumbai with photography as his main subject. He was made the party's working president in 2003 and took over as its chief in 2013, after his father's death.
Chief Minister
After the 2019 Assembly election the Shiv Sena parted ways with the BJP and formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi government with the NCP and the Congress. Thackeray, who had never held elected office, was sworn in as Chief Minister on 28 November 2019 and was elected to the Legislative Council by MLAs in May 2020.
In June 2022 Eknath Shinde led most of the party's MLAs into rebellion. Thackeray resigned on 29 June, before a floor test, and Shinde became Chief Minister with BJP support the next day. In May 2023 the Supreme Court said the Governor and the Speaker had acted illegally in parts of the crisis, but it could not restore his government because he had stepped down.
The party after the split
The Election Commission gave the Shiv Sena name and the bow-and-arrow symbol to Shinde's faction in February 2023. Thackeray's group became the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), which won 9 Lok Sabha seats in 2024 as part of the INDIA bloc but only 20 of 288 Assembly seats later that year, when the BJP-led Mahayuti swept the state.
His Council term ended on 13 May 2026. His son Aaditya Thackeray announced in April that the party would field Ambadas Danve for the seat, so Uddhav Thackeray no longer sits in either house of the legislature.
Cases
His 2020 affidavit listed ten pending cases. Most are private complaints, several of them for defamation. None had led to a conviction.
